Arabica Coffee v Robusta Coffee: How Do They Differ?

Arabica Coffee v Robusta Coffee: How Do They Differ?

If you are a coffee fanatic, you’ve probably heard the words Arabica or Robusta. The Arabica v Robusta coffee debate is prevalent among coffee drinkers around the world. This guide will help you understand the key differences between the two coffee bean types.

Arabica Coffee v Robusta Coffee

Arabica coffee is desired more than any other coffee type in the world and comprises 75 to 80 percent of the world’s production. Arabica coffee beans originated in Africa, in the ancient forests of South West Ethiopia or South East Sudan. Arabica has two primary varieties: Typica and Bourbon, and Brazil is the largest producer of the Arabica variety in the world.

Robusta coffee makes up the remaining 20 to 25 percent of the world’s coffee production and is mainly grown in Vietnam. It also originated in Africa and comes from the beans of the Coffea canephora plant. Robusta coffee is mainly used in espresso, instant coffee, and as an addition to some coffee blends.

Taste

Arabica coffee has a wide taste range due to all the different varieties. It can be produced to be a sweet and smooth coffee bean. Robusta coffee often contains notes of chocolate and fruit. A cup of Robusta coffee tends to be higher in caffeine content than a cup of Arabica coffee. When blended together, as they often are in our range of coffee beans, a smooth and decadent flavour can be curated.

Growing Conditions

Arabica coffee beans are sensitive and need to be produced in cooler climates at higher elevations between 600 and 2000 metres. This type of bean must have rich soil, shade, moisture, and sun. On the other hand, Robusta coffee beans can be grown at lower elevations between 200 and 800 metres.

Quality

The quality of each coffee type is unparalleled. If produced in quality conditions, the final product can be a coffee lover's dream. Arabica coffee beans can differ in taste depending on the region they are grown in. Robusta coffee is easier to grow due their ability to be grown at lower altitudes.
