Facts & Fiction
There’s a story that a fatigued Mohammed was offered a cup of coffee by the archangel Gabriel. It is more likely that coffee was discovered in Northern Africa/Arabia where the Arabs guarded their secrets of coffee making for centuries. They say that coffee was most popular amongst the whirling dervishes (to fuel their lengthy dances) and monks (to help them stay awake during devotions).

Types of Beans
Arabica
Arabica is a coffee variety best produced at high altitudes close to the equator, where the weather conditions are ideal for these hard and aromatic beans. The bean is fruity, or floral, in character, while being acidic. It’s also known to have a low caffeine content.
Robusta
Robusta is grown mostly in Vietnam as it prefers low lying humid climates. It thrives on the plains in this hot environment and develops into a distinct character. It’s also a more intense species that can lift Arabica profile with a higher caffeine content.

Origin
The coffee bean was first cultivated in Yemen, in approximately 850 C.E. Its value was soon realised and it spread across Arabia. Eventually coffee plants were smuggled out to the Dutch, who in turn introduced it to the Americas. South America is now responsible for over 50% of the world's total coffee production.
Coffee is now cultivated across the globe, including:
- - South America
- - Indonesia
- - Central & West Africa
- - South East Asia
